Argentina rallies for missing man

Thousands of demonstrators have rallied in cities across Argentina to mark a year since a key witness in a landmark human rights trial disappeared. Retired bricklayer Jorge Julio Lopez vanished after testifying in the case of ex-police chief Miguel Etchecolatz.

Mr Etchecolatz is now serving a life sentence for human rights abuses committed under military rule in Argentina between 1976 and 1983. (more…)

Who violates human rights the most?

The annual Human Rights report issued by Britain’s Foreign Office lays particular stress this year on the denial of human rights by terrorist groups and not just governments.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who introduced the report himself, told a mixed news conference of reporters and human rights activists: “We must look at non-state forces as well as state forces when we look at human rights.” (more…)

Press condemns Guantanamo ‘violations’

Papers in the Arab and wider Islamic world have harsh words for the US government following the suicides of three prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

Commentators say the policy of holding suspects indefinitely at the camp is a continuing violation of human rights, which is leading to acts of desperation by inmates.

Some voice scepticism at the official US account of the three deaths, and demand an independent inquiry. (more…)
